Presold to 124 countries, seen by 5.94 million
Scoring a pre-release forecast against the actual admissions, and what a presale number does not guarantee
The brief, in full
This map was made on May 6, 2026, off the news that the film Gunche had been presold to 124 countries before it even opened. What was written down then was a forecast; the result is in now. Keeping the forecast next to the measured outcome, rather than deleting it, shows what a presale number does and does not tell you.
What was known before release#
The facts as of May 6, 2026
Showbox announced two things on May 6: presales to 124 countries overseas, and an official invitation to the Midnight Screenings section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival. The domestic release came a fortnight later, on May 21.
Presold to 124 countries#
Deals closed before Cannes
Showbox announced presales into 124 countries ahead of release, and outlets including Yonhap carried the same figure. A presale is a deal struck on a director, a cast and a synopsis rather than a finished film, so the number measures the credit attached to that director's name, not the quality of the work.
Cannes Midnight Screenings#
The slot genre films get
It was officially invited to the Midnight Screenings section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival. Unlike the competition, this section hands out no prizes, but it is where a genre film gets its first showing in front of the world's distributors, which makes it every bit as useful for international sales.
Yeon Sang-ho and Smilegate#
A game company sits in the production credits
It is directed by Yeon Sang-ho of Train to Busan and Hellbound, and the production credits carry Wow Point alongside the game company Smilegate. A game company appearing as a film producer means an intent not to keep the IP inside one medium. Part of why presales landed so easily before release is that this combination was easy to explain.
The numbers that actually came in#
KOFIC integrated ticketing tallies
It opened on May 21, and from there the numbers stopped being announcements and became tallies. Below are the figures confirmed in KOFIC's integrated ticketing system and in reporting that cites it.
199,768 on day one#
The start was not an explosion
The opening day drew 199,768 admissions. For a Korean tentpole that is not an especially large first-day figure. Anyone who read the 124-country presale headline as a promise of an overwhelming opening had that expectation missed.
1 million on day four, 2.01 million on day five#
It built from behind
It passed a cumulative one million on the morning of May 24, and by the next day, May 25, stood at 2,018,644. Adding another million in a single day means word of mouth over the first weekend really did move. A release shows its strength in that slope, not in its opening day.
Break-even at 3 million#
Crossed on day ten
The break-even point reported was three million admissions, and it crossed at 3,000,058 on the afternoon of May 30, the tenth day of release. For an investor the meaningful date is neither the opening day nor the day it topped the chart, but this one.
4.04 million on June 3, 5.94 million on July 26#
Second among 2026 Korean films
It stood at 4,043,759 as of June 3 and at 5,948,845 in the July 26 tally. That is second among Korean releases of 2026 at the same point, roughly a third of the 16.91 million taken by the year's leader, The Man Who Lives With the King. A film that did well and a film that owned the year sit in different places.
What was actually confirmed abroad#
Taiwan, and Asian openings
Among the overseas results, Taiwan is the one confirmed in figures: cumulative revenue of roughly NT$115 million as of May 31, reported alongside a claim of number-one openings in five major Asian markets. Of the 124 countries, only a handful have had real numbers made public like this.
The forecast this map wrote on May 6#
And how it scored
The pre-release version of this map set down one test. That test is kept rather than deleted, placed beside the actual result. The point of keeping a forecast is not to be right, but to learn where to look the next time the same kind of news comes around.
The test then: 1.5 million over the first weekend#
May 23 to 24
The pre-release version wrote that the thesis held if the cumulative total passed 1.5 million over the opening weekend of May 23 to 24. It was an attempt to turn the assumption that presale scale carries into domestic box office into a single checkable line.
Result: it cleared the bar, a day late#
1 million on the 24th, 2.01 million on the 25th
The cumulative total on the morning of May 24 was one million, and the 1.5 million line fell somewhere inside that day. It was unambiguously past on the 25th, at 2.01 million. The direction was right and the timing was off by a day. Not rounding that into a hit is what makes the next forecast better.
The test to switch to#
Days to break-even, not opening weekend
Opening weekend swings hard on marketing spend and screen count. How many days it took to reach break-even, by contrast, absorbs word of mouth and repeat viewing. For Gunche that was ten days, and on that measure the judgment does not wobble on a one-day margin.
What a presale guarantees#
Risk transfer, not box office
A large presale means the producer moved part of its recoupment risk onto overseas distributors before release. How much those distributors actually earned is a separate question, and usually not disclosed.
A country count is not market size#
The nature of the number 124
In a list of 124 countries, a market with a few dozen screens and one with a few thousand carry equal weight. It counts contracts, not revenue, so simply adding territories inflates the headline. Reading this number means asking which countries are in it.
What is unconfirmed stays blank#
Budget and regional distributors
The film's total production budget, and the names of its North American, Taiwanese and German distributors, are not confirmed in public sources. An earlier version of this map listed three distributor names; they were removed because the basis could not be found again. A correction is emptying a field, not swapping one number for another.
Where this leaves work#
The jobs are somewhere else
While one film sold into 124 countries and drew 5.94 million viewers, people behind it handled contracts, settlements and subtitles. The attention goes to the cast; the repeating jobs appear over there.
Content sales agent#
The job that made 124 contracts
Presales into 124 countries are 124 contracts a sales lead closed at film markets. The role needs an understanding of the work, contract practice and languages to meet inside one person, and the number of such seats in the domestic job market is small. Which companies hire and what experience counts is laid out on a separate page.

A stretch that still runs on spreadsheets
Terms, start dates and expiry differ country by country, and secondary rights and remake rights attach separately. A good deal of that administration still happens in spreadsheets. The observation here is that tooling an independent studio could actually afford is missing.
open_in_newstartupxo.com/ko/news/2026/05/k-content-global-licensing-saasWhy a game company joined a film#
Cross-media is IP life extension
Smilegate appearing in the production credits is an attempt to ride game IP and screen IP off each other. Arcane and Cyberpunk Edgerunners already set the precedent of extending a source game's life. The reverse direction, a film expanding into a game, has no announced plan for this title yet.
No filming-location page was made#
Shot on sets, so there is nowhere to go
The story is set inside a Seoul high-rise and was largely shot on sets, so there is no place an audience can actually visit. Building a location page for a film without locations means publishing addresses nobody can go to. Some pages are better left unmade even when you could make them.
